Grandma's house may not be an option

Carson Valley is experiencing a white Christmas and it's getting whiter by the minute. So far nearly 3 inches of snow have fallen in Genoa and it's coming down in big fat flakes.

A winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow is in effect through 4 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The expectation of 2-4 inches of snow in some areas has been met in Nevada's Oldest town. The Weather Service said getting over the mountains and through the woods to Grandma's House may not be happening.

Interstate 80 and Highway 88 are both closed over the mountains. Chains are being required for non-four-wheel-drive vehicles over Echo Summit. Snow tires are being required on all of Highway 395 in Nevada and Highway 50 through Douglas.

It rained in Carson Valley through much of the night, turning to snow at just after 5 a.m.

Weather watchers report Heavenly Valley received a foot of snow and Kirkwood received 22 inches. Holbrook Junction received 2 inches of snow according to a spotter there.
