Sister casino's closure won't affect Sharkey's

The impending closure of the Silver Club in Sparks won't affect Sharkey's Casino in downtown Gardnerville, according to Sharkey's manager and controller Ron Terrell.

Sharkey's and the Silver Club are both owned by the Holder Hospitality Group.

Terrell said the Silver Club will be closing on Jan 10. About 200 people will be laid off as a result of the closure.

"It will not affect Sharkey's at all," Terrell said. "Sharkey's is a good profitable property with no problems."

Terrell said the Gardnerville casino will be undergoing some renovations for the new year, including the demolition of an old house in the Sharkey's parking lot, once a salon operated by the late Jane Rosenbrock.

"It's my New Year's Resolution," Terrell said. "That's one thing I want to do for the town. They want nice and secure lighted parking. It's part of the downtown revitalization program."

Terrell didn't know how many additional parking spaces the demolition would add, but said the lot would be open to the general public.

"We want to make a nice place downtown," he said.

Sharkey's will be hosting a "roaring 20s" New Year's Eve party featuring the Mile High Jazz Band.
