Teen charged in theft of deputy's duty weapon

An 18-year-old Gardnerville man is set to appear in East Fork Justice Court Dec. 17, charged with possession of stolen property after investigators found a deputy's stolen 9 mm duty handgun in the suspect's closet.

Fredy Reyes was arrested Dec. 3.

His court-appointed lawyer Kris Brown asked for a continuance Wednesday and told Justice Jim EnEarl she was still negotiating with the district attorney's office.

She said Reyes was under a hold by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. He is in custody in Douglas County Jail on $25,000 bail.

According to court documents, investigators were led to Reyes after a woman contacted authorities and said her son, a Carson Valley Middle School student, had a box of ammunition, a global positioning system and a flashlight that did not belong to him.

Officers made the connection to Reyes who told them the stolen Smith & Wesson handgun was in his bedroom closet under a pile of clothes.

The deputy reported the items stolen from his personal vehicle on Nov. 27.

He said the duty gear was not visible from the outside of his vehicle that he kept parked and locked in the driveway, but there was no sign of forced entry to the vehicle.
