Christmas gala a success

Thank you so much for your incredible support for the Douglas County Historical Society's Christmas Gala. We made money for our museums and had a wonderful time while we were at it. Thank you for sharing the day with us.

For all the kids who were shy about sitting on Santa's lap, this is a photo of Ingrid Johnson, 95 years young, who had no problem telling Santa what she wants for Christmas. From the looks of her smile, she's going to get it all too.

Now we get down to the serious business of the holidays. First, if you haven't already, come on in to the museum and vote for your favorite trees and gingerbread houses. The winning tree will be announced right here in this column in January. The winning gingerbread houses will be announced Saturday.

Don't leave without picking up your copy of the Douglas County Historical Society 2009 Calendar. It features all the winning photos from last year's photo contests. Supplies are limited and, once they are gone, that will be the end of the 2009 calendar.

Stop in the Main Street Bookstore. Almost everything is on sale for 20 percent off and you don't need to be a member to take advantage of the sale prices. There are books and T-shirts and all kinds of great Christmas presents or stocking stuffers. We also have See's Candies, not on sale, but 10 percent off for historical society members.

Also available are the 2009 Entertainment books. The book contains discount offers from local and national restaurants, hotels and resorts, entertainment venues and savings for everything from apparel to flowers. By enrolling your membership online there are many additional savings from your favorite places such as movie tickets and offers from top online retailers. This also makes a great gift.

Perhaps the best gift of all is an annual membership in your Douglas County Historical Society. The recipient gets a year of free admission to the museums and insider information on all that is going on. The museums get the gift of your support for the work we do to maintain the history of Douglas County.

Finally, keep looking around Douglas County for that perfect shot that represents December. The December photo contest is now open with entries due by 4 p.m. Dec. 31. Send your photo in to the museum or bring it in yourself. Or, if you prefer, e-mail it to in2my2cats@yahoo.com. We need photos to have a DCHS calendar for 2010.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums, the museum in Gardnerville and the Genoa Court House Museum, do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
