It's all about the ring

You're thinking I'm going to write about my cell phone ring tone, but it's about a wedding ring. My father is the oldest of five brothers and I am the first grandchild and the oldest of three girls. My grandmother died a few months ago at the nice old age of 90 and my mother-in-law passed away last month at the age of 91. My Grandma Dorothy used to love to correct me that she was younger.

Yesterday my mother gave me a beautiful little package from my Uncle Johnny " it was Grandma's wedding ring. It brings tears to my eyes even as I am sharing this with you.

As I've mentioned in previous columns, my oldest son Garrett is in Japan aboard the USS George Washington and is anxious to propose to his fiancee, Rachael, who is on the same ship. I offered him my wedding ring that his father gave me but I also discouraged him from getting married because they are both committed to the Navy until 2012 and 2013. If they get married, they can't be on the same ship but can be on the same coast. It doesn't sound like they would see each other as much as they do now. Anyway, they'll be home on leave in January, so I should find that old ring and polish it with some toothpaste.

In the kitchen

I'm not going to tell names or places but I had the most fun last week working with Paula in the kitchen. I got to set up chicken tenders and pizzas for about 300 people. But the most fun was the commercial dishwasher that could wash a load in two minutes. I was so excited every time I loaded it with a cookie sheet or a tray of utensils. OK, it doesn't take much.

Christmas fair

The Douglas High School craft fair is 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Every year I look forward to this event to come up with ideas for presents for the following year. I bought neck scarves last year cheaper than I could make them. I bought Jenee a loom set for Christmas last year and had everyone in our house crocheting " it was great!
