Careful on the highway this holiday weekend

More than a 10th of Nevadans are expected to take to the roads this weekend for the annual Labor Day motor trip.

According to AAA Nevada, 264,000 Nevadans will take a trip of more than 50 miles over the weekend. Of course for some in our large state, 50 miles is a trip to the grocery store. But anyone on the roads this weekend will find them busier than normal.

They may not be quite as busy as previous year's though. The number of travelers on the road will decrease by 1.8 percent, according to AAA.

However, with two interstate routes passing through Douglas County, Highway 395 stretching from Southern California to points north and Highway 50 crossing the nation's midsection, that decrease might be a little hard to spot.

We urge those residents who are traveling this weekend to give themselves plenty of time to reach their destination, to take lots of breaks and to keep a sharp eye out.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff's Office will be on duty this weekend watching for unsafe and drunk drivers.

Hopefully, with their help and by paying attention to the road, we will all be back on Tuesday safe, rested and ready for the coming fall.
