Letters to the Editor Aug. 20

Editor:

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who either helped directly or supported me by word or vote in the recent election.

The list of those who worked actively on my campaign is much too long to print here, and I'm reluctant to even try, not least for fear that I'll omit someone whose work was critical.

Elections are won in small increments, and, looking back, there's no one thing that I can put my finger on that made the decisive difference.

It is at the same time gratifying and humbling to be a representative of the choice of direction that the electorate has endorsed for the future of our county, and my gratitude to you all. See you in November.

First I want to thank all 2,621 voters who voted for me, a very big thank-you. We did our best and I think we put up a good run for the roses.

All 2,621 of you get my vote for really caring about Douglas County.

I want to say that it was an enlightening experience for me.

We decided early on that we would run a positive, not negative campaign, even if the opposition went negative.

I feel proud and honored by you who decided to vote for me based on that fact.

Greg Lynn received more votes, we can all guess at the reason, and believe me when I say we are guessing.

However, we must move on.

The voters have spoken and we must accept what they have said, that is democracy and that is what I am all about, along with principled behavior, accountability and transparency.

I hope all Republicans will back Greg Lynn.

Are you a voracious reader? Do you have the latest book on reserve? Do you get the New York Times bestsellers as soon as they are released? All for free? Then you use the Douglas County Public Library too. This is a wonderful thing, but money is getting tight and the library has to cut back. We library patrons can help ourselves.

The library has an acquisitions fund, and we can donate money. It can be for general purchases or for specific types of books - adult or children, non-fiction, mystery or science fiction. My personal plan is to keep track of the red dots and pay a dollar a book. I'll write a check every two months, but it won't add up to the cost of one book. If other readers do the same, it will add up to more than one. Think about it.

By the way, the library also has large print books, magazines, newspapers, books on CD, books on cassette, and now books on MP3, as well as some music CDs and computer software.

Also, they will be glad to take your excess books and sell them to benefit the library. There is also a magazine swap area " bring some, take some, or just take some.

I do not know in what field Barbara Griffiths took her doctorate, but it clearly was not in political science since she refers to this nation as a democracy. Our founders in noting the history of governments chose the Roman version of a democratic republic.

The Soviet Union was a true democracy of oligarchic proportions. The founders wisely chose to steer clear of a democracy.

In his book "Greeks & Romans Bearing Gifts" Professor Carl J. Richard goes to considerable extent in explaining how the founders were substantially guided by history of governments, and that effort alone distinguishes our constitution from other, less freedom protecting forms.

But do not despair madam, you are not alone in misstating our form of government. What passes for public education ignores such details in the same manner that they sidestep the literary classics. They can tell a student about slavery though, and totally in the wrong context. Kings James II and George III caused that, not the colonists.
