School back in session next week

It's time for Douglas elementary students to cut their hair, buy pencils and say good-bye to a hot and smoky summer because school goes back in session next week.

Douglas County elementary schools open their doors Wednesday. Middle and high schools start classes Aug. 25.

"I wish the summer was longer," said 11-year-old Hunter Dohrn, who'll be returning to Meneley Elementary School as a sixth- grader.

Hunter spent his summer dirt biking and BMXing and said he's not looking forward to the classroom.

"I've gotten pretty good at riding," he said. "I want to become a professional."

Hunter's elder brother, 14-year-old Kody Krupp, spent his summer skateboarding and going to the beach.

"I want to go back to school," he said.

Kody will be a ninth-grader at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.

"It gives me something to do all day, and I like hanging out with my friends there," he said.

Students will see some administrative changes at certain schools.

"Gardnerville Elementary will begin the new year with a new principal," said superintendent Carol Lark. "His name is Shannon Brown, and he comes to us from Sacramento, Calif. I am confident that Gardnerville Elementary will thrive under his leadership."

Carson Valley Middle School will have a new vice principal, Ed Perkins, who is transferring from Whittell High School.

"He is an experienced administrator and will be a great addition to the team," Lark said.

Students will see some changes in the classroom, too.

"We received a grant for the purchase of 21 Promethean Activeboards," Lark said. "They are interactive whiteboards that allow for dynamic exchange of information. The technology will allow teachers and students to create, save, share and interact with lessons. Each school will receive at least one and several will receive two."

Middle schoolers may find their English classes more rigorous than last year's.

"Grades seven through nine are implementing a new program, SpringBoards, in all English classes," Lark said. "It's based on the Pre-AP College Board Standards for College Success, emphasizing standards that identify the critical thinking skills and knowledge that all students need to succeed in college.

"The curriculum supports high expectation for all students, provides a seamless transition between grade levels, as well as provides rigorous academic course work."

Lark invited parents to be part of the new school year.

"It is important to me that all of our parents/guardians realize that they are always welcome in our schools," she said. "I hope that they feel free to visit our schools and get to know the fine staffs that are there to serve their children."

Thirteen-year-old Mike Rocca is not so enthusiastic.

"School's boring," he said.

Mike will be a seventh grader at Carson Valley Middle School. Although he is skeptical about the whole learning thing, he's excited to meet some older girls.

"That's kind of cool," he said.
