Good days for Genoa hangings

Performances for "The Curse of the Hanging Tree" are 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Aug. 23. This is the story of an actual trial and hanging that took place a long time ago in a town called Genoa. Get your tickets now, as these performances are limited by the seating in the various venues where the performance takes place. Tickets are $15 per person at the Main Street Bookstore. There are still openings for Hanging Tree players. Call Laurie Hickey at 782-2893 to find out more.

We have new art hanging in the Main Street Bookstore for the month of August. Linda Bottoms, Nancy Clarke, Helen Martin and Mark Tompkins have hung examples of their artwork for all to enjoy. Stop in and see.

We are also midway through our final photo contest for the 2009 calendar. Your August entry needs to be something that describes August in Douglas County. Examples could include kids going back to school or that illusive summer rain shower that we can't seem to get this year.

Photos can be entered into the August contest either on line to my e-mail address or by dropping off a printed photo at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville. If you elect to drop off a printed photo, please make sure it is printed in a high enough resolution to be reproducible. If we can't reproduce it in the calendar, we can't use it.

September opens with our usual Student-Senior Day, Saturday, Sept. 6. Students and seniors get into the Gardnerville museum for free and we will have a guest speaker at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m.

On Sept. 11, our lecture series will feature Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs Director Michael Fischer who will portray John Sparks. The lecture series is also open to the public for free.

The last of the Douglas County Historical Society's summer swap meets are Sept. 13 and 27. This will be your final opportunity to unload all those buried treasures in your garage. With the holidays coming, these will be great opportunities for crafters to show and sell their wares.

Sunday, Sept. 14, will be the return of the DCHS membership picnic to be held in Mormon Station State Historic Park. If you are a member and would like to attend, call 782-2555 for more information. If you aren't a member, join! Then you can attend and participate in the fun.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
