On the Radar: While scholarships are rare, roster spots still abound

Shawhan has already been contacted by Boise State and Nevada. The biggest block between him and the recruiting game at this point is the fact that he is off to Europe to attend the elite Spain Tennis Academy in Barcelona. Shouldn't hurt his chances of landing a college scholarship at all, but we won't get to see much of him in Carson Valley this year.

Soccer is one of the hardest sports to break in to at the top level, but Freitas probably has the best shot this season. She scored 16 goals last year and has 24 for her career.

Williams is a solid outside hitter that earned second-team all-league honors last season after leading the team in aces (36) and coming in second in kills (202).

Hoelzen is a crafty lefty with a knack for big-game performances. He has a no-hitter to his name (vs. North Valleys), nine career wins and 68 career strikeouts. Baseball is exceptionally hard to break in to at the Division I level, although not as much at the junior college level.

Gorton been in contact with some schools (most notably Washington, Hawaii and Nevada), but has been battling a sore knee this summer, which has limited her chances to go out and compete. Regardless, she does own the school record at Douglas in the long jump (17-4.5).

Aside from his state berth and undefeated league slate in the 130-pound class as a junior, Barker has claimed a number of honors at prestigious tournaments. Most recently, he won the individual tournament at the OSU wrestling camp in Reno.
