Guide helps Sierra homeowners create defensible living space

The Sierra Nevada Alliance book, "Sierra Nevada Yard and Garden," is a guide for homeowners on how to create yards and gardens that guard against wildfire, are easy to care for, are in harmony with wildlife, use low-maintenance, native plants and protect and conserve community drinking water.

The guide describes fire-safe designs, plant selection and tips for gardeners living at elevations of 900 to 6,200 feet. It was created by the California Resource Conservation Districts, Sierra Nevada Conservancy, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and State Water Resources Control Board.

"Sierra Nevada Yard and Garden" is a full-color 157-page guide available free on Sierra Nevada Alliance's Web site, sierranevadaalliance.org or for $14 plus shipping and handling for hard copies.
