R-C Sports Notebook: McNutt hiring adds yet another dimension to the Sierra League

As though bringing two of the top baseballprograms in the region into the Sierra League next year weren't enough, Galena went ahead and took it a step further last week.

The Grizzlies announced the hiring of former Carson High coach Ron McNutt on Friday, matching one of the state's best feeder systems with one of the state's most celebrated coaches.

It's been called one of the worst-kept secrets in Northern Nevada high school sports over the summer, but the official announcement last week still sent shockwaves through the baseball community.

The storylines will abound next season.

You'll have McNnutt coaching in the visiting dugout at the field bearing his name on the Carson campus.

The coach-player rivalry will be renewed in the Douglas-Galena series as McNutt will take on his former catcher, John Glover.

Add to it that the winningest baseball coach in state history (657 victories over 29 seasons to be exact) will be coaching in an exceptionally strong league with Galena, Douglas, Carson, Damonte Ranch, South Tahoe, Manogue, Wooster and Fallon all with legitimate shots at playoffs spots.

Should be interesting, to say the least.

The first week of August is traditionally relatively light, sports-wise, but next week everything will kick back into gear.

Football will get its first official practice in on Aug. 14 with the rest of the sports following suit on Aug. 18.

The Tiger football team scrimmages McQueen the next week and launches into the season with a season-opener at home against Las Vegas a week after that.

Both soccer teams and the volleyball team begin play that same day, Aug. 29, at various tournaments across the state.

From there, there will more or less be something going every day except for Sundays and Mondays through the start of the playoffs in late October/early November.
