Carson man nabbed following Oregon chase

A Douglas County probationer wanted in connection with a series of forged checks was arrested in Oregon over the weekend after leading police there on a car chase which reached speeds up to 130 mph.

Oregon State Police say Daniel Mondragon III, 26, and Jennifer Penman, 25, were stopped in a suspected stolen vehicle near Baker City, Ore., Saturday night but fled while the officer was checking their identities.

Police said Mondragon struck a highway marker sign as he drove onto the median shoulder to avoid spike strips. The chase continued for several more miles before Mondragon pulled over, according to the Baker City Oregon Herald.

On April 16, Mondragon was allegedly involved in a police chase in Placer County, Calif., in which he rammed a patrol car to elude capture in a vehicle stolen out of Carson City.

He is also suspected of attempting to cash a stolen check earlier in the day at an Auburn, Calf., bank. The check was stolen from a vehicle burglary in Carson City.

Mondragon was sentenced to a suspended six-year prison sentence in October by Douglas County District Judge Dave Gamble in connection with a counterfeit check-ring. He was ordered to attend a six-month treatment program.

Carson City Sheriff's Detective Craig Lowe said Mondragon is wanted here on a felony warrant for obtaining money under false pretenses.

Mondragon is being held at the Baker County Jail on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, attempting to elude a police officer in a vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, giving false information to a police officer, and failure to perform the duties of a driver involved in a crash, according to the Herald.

Penman, 25, of Reno is being held on a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. She will likely face charges in Placer County as well.
