While the new all-weather track facility at Douglas High School made its debut during a pair of interleague four-way meets to open the season, this weekend will be the $2 million facility's coming out party.

Twenty-one schools and more than 1,000 athletes are expected to compete Saturday in the Big George Invitational " the inagural run of what is planned to be an annual fundraiser for the Tiger track program.

The meet is named after Big George Ventures, whose owner Ray Sidney donated more than $1.6 million toward the renovation of the sports complex at Douglas High.

"It's going to be a pretty big event," Douglas boys' coach Jim Abbott said. "We're looking forward to it."

Aside from the large numbers descending on Minden this weekend, the meet will also be the final invitational in the region before heading into the league, regional and state championships in the next three weeks.

Because of that, most of the Northern 4A school are expected to attend, making the meet an excellent marker for where teams stand heading into regionals.

Trials will be run all morning starting at 8:30 a.m.

A series of presentations are planned to honor Sidney's contributions during opening ceremonies at 12:15 p.m.

The finals will begin at 1 p.m. and are expected to run past 5 p.m.

Admission to the event is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
