Valley 4-H'ers go on to Nevada Junior Livestock Show in Reno

Members of Douglas County 4-H Livestock projects competed with 4-H and FFA members of Douglas, Carson and Storey Counties for the annual Livestock Qualifier at the Silver Saddle Ranch in Carson City on April 12. 4-H members must earn a blue ribbon on their livestock project at this event to move on to the Nevada Junior Livestock Show at the Reno Livestock Events Center on May 1-4. The show was judged by Pete Mangum of the University Of Nevada Cooperative Extension of Ely.

Livestock members learn how to raise swine, sheep, goats and beef while discovering how to choose healthy animals using confirmation and health guidelines, manage their animals weight and rate of gain, care for sick or injured animals, deliver consumer livestock standards and best management practices.

Members participate in county and state livestock shows and must practice specific techniques to show their animals. During the show, members must present their animals to the judge during group sessions and be able to answer questions about their animal. Members are expected to ready their animals for the show with minimal adult assistance. Members work together to help others before, during and after the show.

The show was hosted by the Carson City Livestock project with a barbecue sponsored by the Douglas County Livestock projects. 4-H is a youth development program of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. Information, 782-9960.
