Fundraiser set for DHS grad hurt in accident

A benefit dinner for 2002 Douglas High School graduate Stella Baldauskas is set for 6-11 p.m. April 25 at Sharkey's casino in Gardnerville.

Baldauskas, 24, was injured March 9 in an off-road accident near Las Vegas. She suffered a broken back and has had extensive surgery.

"Stella had a vertebra completely destroyed and replaced with a metal apparatus," said her sister, Debbie Baldauskas. "Another vertebra was broken and salvaged. The broken vertebra and three others were fused and connected to the metal apparatus with two metal rods as a foundation."

Baldauskas had just started employment at a nonprofit organization when the accident occurred.

"She did not have insurance at the time of the accident," Debbie Baldauskas said. "She will be unable to work for about a year and is in desperate need of financial support."

Stella Baldauskas grew up in Gardnerville and was active in the community.

She was involved in sports, church, high school and community theater. She was a Miss Douglas County Pageant contestant and also did Marilyn Monroe impersonations for events hosted by the Valley Cruisers, Veterans Administration and other organizations.

She graduated from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, last spring with a degree in theater and performing arts.

Dinner will be served from 6:30-8:30 p.m. followed by music by Ramblin' & Co. Other events include a vintage fashion show and raffles throughout the evening.

"We are in the process of gathering raffle prizes and would appreciate any donations from local businesses," Debbie Baldauskas said.

Tickets are $15 per person, $25 per couple and $10 for children under 10.
