TenBroeck advances to finals

In the first three tournaments of the four-stage Nike Junior Tour series held at various sites in Northern California, 13-year-old James TenBroeck was edged out in each of the quarterfinals of the boys 14s.

The fourth stage turned out to be a charm.

Played on the weekend of Aug. 24-26 at the University of Santa Cruz, TenBroeck advanced to the finals before he lost 6-4, 6-4, to No. 2 seed Brandon Sutter of El Dorado Hills, Calif. TenBroeck, seeded No. 6, won four matches, including a 7-5, 6-2 win in the semifinals against Sean Kolar (who had beaten the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals).

At Santa Cruz, TenBroeck received the Sportsmanship Award for his division.

In the series, participants need to make it to at least the semifinals to qualify for the sectional playoff, which will determine who competes in the NJT USA National Masters to be held at Stanford University on Sept. 28-30. Winners from there travel to Torino, Italy for the International Masters Tournament on Oct. 20-27.

When the Northern California Grand Prix series of tournaments concluded at the end of August, TenBroeck finished ranked No. 1 in his division, 117 points ahead of Brandon On of San Francisco.
