There is just one more day to get nominations in to The Record-Courier or the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce for the annual Community Awards to be held Nov. 2. A man who admitted to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl apparently has survived a hunger strike and is scheduled to appear in Douglas County District Court for sentencing. Elisandro Mendoza, 45, told Judge Dave Gamble in September that he would be refusing food and water in jail. It was later confirmed that Mendoza was eating. The California resident denied raping the girl in court, but admitted he could be convicted of a more serious charge. As it is he faces life in prison with the possibility of parole.
