Sports Today: Net Rippers win tournament in shootout

The Carson Valley Net Rippers U14 girls' soccer team survived an epic battle with the Diablo Valley Soccer Club that ended with Carson Valley prevailing in the penalty kick round.


With the score tied at zero after 70 minutes of soccer, Tia Lyons, Katie Dry and Kaitlyn Varble all coverted their penalty kicks in the 3-2 shootout.


Brianna Randall came up with a stellar save to block a shot in the fourth round and Diablo Valley's fifth shooter sent the ball sailing over the crossbar to clinch the title for Carson Valley.


In qualifying play, Carson Valley was able to post matching 4-0 wins over the RSU Crush and the Carson Madness.


In the final qualifying match, Carson Valley scored two quick goals against the SBSC Synergy and advanced with a 5-0 win.


The Net Rippers' defense did not allow a goal throughout the tournament and has now posted eight consecutive games without allowing a goal.


The defense include Randall, Cora Moody, Shannon Hubbard, Rochelle Seymour, Allison Chambon and Erica Macias.


Midfielders and forwards Jillian Olivera, Kaelin Mejia, Holly Downer, Kelsey Walsh, Lauren Pickering, Shannon Prinz and Lyons, Dry and Varble also turned in stellar play throughout the weekend.

The Tahoe Grizzlies NorCal Pee Wee Travel hockey team faced the San Francisco Sabercats on Saturday and Sunday at South Lake Tahoe.


The Grizzlies dropped the first game 8-4. DJ Freeman of Carson City had two goals and two assists in the game. Heath Sunseri of Gardnerville and Daniel Pearson of Reno each added a goal. The Grizzlies received solid play from Matt Premo of Carson City and Riley Budd of South Lake Tahoe. Goalie Jacob Gordon of Minden stopped 21 shots.


On Sunday, the score ended with a 3-3 tie. The Grizzlies got on the scoreboard early with a goal from Sunseri. Conner Bills from Virginia City scored at the close of the first period. Daniel Pearson concluded the score with a third period goal. Solid play was provided by Carson City's TJ Olsen, Freeman and Premo. Gordon stopped 25 shots.

The Carson Valley Men's Golf Club hosteda tournament Sunday at the Carson Valley Golf Course.


In flight A, Daryle Lewis took first with a 66. Matthew Budjako took second with a 71 and Barry Horton took third with a 72.


In flight B, Bruce Sanford took first with a 61 and Ken Sharples and Paul Finan tied for second at 66.


John Carey won flight C with a 59, Gil Causton took second with a 63 and Ray Gardiol took third with a 71.
