Football: Tigers, Panthers clash in league showdown tonight

Something has to give Friday night as North Valleys and region-leading running back Chris Castellanos come to town to take on Douglas and its region-leading defense.

Castellanos, the 5-10, 180-pound senior, is coming off a 306-yard, three-touchdown effort against Wooster last week and has 1,191 yards and 10 touchdowns on the year.

Douglas is coming off a big win at Damonte Ranch during which the defense allowed just 81 yards on the ground.

For the season, the Tigers are allowing an average of 144.1 yards and a 1.42 touchdowns on the ground per game and 93.1 yards and 0.7 touchdowns through the air.

The Tigers have a standout running back of their own in Brock Peterson, who has run for 789 yards and 11 touchdowns on the year. Add to that two capable quarterbacks in David Laird (the school's No. 3 all-time career passer) and junior Tim Rudnick (who threw for two touchdowns and 102 yards in last week's win over Damonte Ranch) and North Valleys will have its hands full on defense.

The Panthers are 3-4 overall and 2-2 in Sierra League play, while Douglas is still in the thick of the Sierra League title hunt with a 3-1 league record and 5-2 record overall.

It will be the Tigers' last home game of the season, so the senior football players, cheerleaders and band members will all be honored during the game.

Also Raymond Sidney and Robbe Lehmann, both of Big George Ventures " a company that has donated about $2 million to the construction of the new football complex at Douglas " will be honored just before kickoff for their contributions to the school.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
