Tennis: Ritger leads Tiger tennis teams into regionals

Heading into this week's Northern 4A Regional Individual Tennis Championships, Douglas High freshman Amelia Ritger will be the Sierra League's No. 1 seed.

Ritger went 27-0 on the year and defeated High Desert No. 2 Hailey Llop, of Galena, during a match earlier this season. She did not get a chance to face High Desert No. 1 Hannah Llop, also of Galena, before the match was rained out.

She faces a number of large obstables along the way with a potential rematch with Spanish Springs' Kim Lloyd (seeded No. 4 in the High Desert) in the quartfinals.

Lloyd battled Ritger to a tiebreaker in the team playoffs before Ritger pulled ahead for the win.

A possible matchup with Hannah Llop awaits in the semifinals. The top three advance to the state tournament.

The girls' singles tournament begins at 3 p.m. Thursday at Carson High School.

Douglas also got a No. 7 seed for senior Samantha Barns and Cesarina Ceglia will be playing as an at-large.

In doubles, the senior tandem of Sarah Barnhill and Lauren Seymour claimed a No. 3 seed and Caitlyn Boddy and Jenna Dykes and Marissa Delgadillo and Linsey Glass each punched at-large tickets into the regionals.

On the boys' side, Keagan Chipp and Robert Shawhan took the No. 2 seed in the Sierra League, despite only playing three sets together during the regular season.

"Keagan and Robert have an excellent chance of making it through the draw," coach Mike McLaughlin said.

John McLaughlin and Spike Neri claimed the other Douglas doubles' berth.

Andrew Soloman took the No. 7 seed in the singles bracket and Marshall Jessup got the Tigers' at-large berth.

The boys' singles tournament begins Thursday at 3 p.m. at Centennial Park and the doubles tournament gets underway Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Centennial.
