1A Roundup: Coleville thumps Virginia City football

The Coleville football team ran away with a 52-18 win against Virginia City over the weekend, improving to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in league play on the year.

Coleville fell back 12-8 in the first quarter but scored six unanswered touchdowns to take control of the Western 1A playoff race.

The Wolves outgained the Muckers 388-158 on offense.

Sophomore quarterback Jason Peters had a hand in five touchdowns, rushing for one and passing for the other four.

Peters ended the day with 160 yards rushing and 172 yards passing.

Senior split end Trevor Anderson caught three touchdown passes and ran another one in on a reverse.

Tight end Marco Barajas led the Wolves in receiving with 69 yards and a touchdown.

Dylan Hudson and Jay Clark each had catches in the game and junior Will Goode added an 8-yard touchdown on the ground.

Colton Ward rounded out the Wolves' offense with 16 yards on the ground.

Coleville forced three turnovers on defense and held Virginia City's standout running back, Zack Ullom, to just 32 yards.

Sean Sherlock and Barajas led the defensive effort, while Carlos Hernandez, Kyle Tidwell and Goode each had a number of big plays as well.

"I was particularly proud of the way our defense played today," Coleville coach Will Sandy said. "Our ability to limit Virginia City's formidable running attack to only 70 yards was a real key to the victory.

"Our offensive line also did an outstanding job picking up blitzes in the passing game and opening big holes to allow us to rush for 216 yards against a very solid defense."

Coleville can clinch the West League title with a win at Eureka Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Sierra Lutheran boys' cross country team took the top two places at Fernley despite having to warm up inside the school due to snow and rain before the race.

The Falcons took home a second-place team trophy, coming in just behind Dayton.

Taylor Love won the race, running the 3.1-mile course in 17:31, while Michael Kubel took second with a time of 18:05.

Andrew Deterding was ninth with a time of 19:26, Levi Grabow was 14th in 19:55, Ryan Jackson took 17th in 20:10, Josh Bankofier was 25th in 20:59 and Ben Martin was 45th in 23:36.

"(We had) outstanding performances from all our runners with some dropping 30 second to nearly 4 minutes off of last year's times on this course," coach Dave Marson said.
