Elks host luau

Members of the Minden/Douglas Elks Lodge #2670 invite you to attend their second annual Hawaiian Luau, Friday at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

The fun kicks off with a no-host cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by a feast of island foods at 6:30 p.m. The mouthwatering menu features roast pork, salmon and shrimp, along with delicious accompaniments to the main course. Dessert will also be offered.

Immediately following dinner, attendees will be treated to a spectacular show. Da Big Tsunami, a popular band based in Carson City, will play traditional and contemporary Hawaiian tunes as well as a unique blend of familiar favorites. You'll also be enchanted by the dramatic moves of traditional hula dancers.

Last year's luau, held at the Lodge on Pit Road in the Ranchos, was a great success. The Elks anticipate an even larger crowd this year, so they've opted to host the luau at the CVIC Hall, in order to accommodate more people.

This is an adult evening. Tickets are $35 per person and include both the meal and show. Proceeds from the event benefit a variety of programs for students, seniors and veterans in our community.

The CVIC hall is located at 1602 Esmeralda Ave. in Minden. For more information, call Dave Trueblood at 782-3416.

Happy Birthday, Scarselli!

The staff at Scarselli Elementary School has planned a special evening to commemorate the school's 20th year, and the community is invited to attend.

The fun happens Tuesday, Oct. 16, 5:30-7 p.m. You'll enjoy a festival atmosphere complete with games, activities, face painting and even a fire truck to check out up close.

A special meal deal is available that evening which includes a hot dog, chips and drink for $2.

There also will be an exciting basket raffle. Individual classes have worked hard to assemble fun and unique gift baskets which will be raffled off throughout the evening. Proceeds from the raffle ticket sales will go toward the school's scholarship fund, which awards scholarships to graduating Douglas seniors who once attended Scarselli.

The celebration coincides with the school's autumn book fair so you might even be able to get a head start on some of that holiday shopping.

Head over to Scarselli on Oct. 16 to join in on the fun and wish them a happy birthday.
