Gardnerville lights off the Christmas season 5:30 p.m. tonight in Heritage Park and Minden won't be far behind with its own events on Friday. November won't even be cold on Saturday when the Parade of Lights marches through town from Lampe to Minden parks and then after a smattering of craft fairs, including Genoa's annual winter fair, things will slow back down as we begin the long slide into Christmas and New Year's.
I have it on good authority that the Sheriff's Office is doing a little preparation of its own for the traditional New Year's melee at Stateline. It's an opportunity for law enforcement from all over Northern Nevada to gather and get up close and personal with their fellow man, who has spent the night up close and personal with a bottle. The deputies are there to make sure everyone has a good time and stays safe, so give them a break, eh.
They aren't lowering the speed limit on Highway 395, according to Transportation spokesman Scott Magruder. The work on the median barrier will take a long time, so the 55 mph signs are a little more permanent than usual. Magruder said the lower speed limit applies where work is going on.
I've been asked three times over the last week when we're getting some weather and the answer is "I don't know." The seven-day forecast on the National Weather Service Web site shows no sign of moisture, which is bad news for ranchers, skiers and anyone who would like to see a little snow fly. Today it will be sunny with a high of 46. Then it bounces back and forth between partly sunny and mostly sunny through next Tuesday.
