Woman charged with DUI

A 23-year-old Gardnerville Ranchos woman whose preliminary test indicated her alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit was arrested late Thursday for drunk driving.

Deputies said her 2-year-old son was asleep in a carseat in the back of her vehicle when she was pulled over at County Road and Highway 88 in Minden at 11:20 p.m. Thursday.

Denise Navarrete was jailed on charges of driving under the influence, first. Her son was released to the custody of his grandmother.

Deputies were alerted to a report of an intoxicated driver and observed a vehicle drive over the roundabout at the intersection of County Road and Highway 88.

According to reports, Navarrete took two breath tests at Douglas County Jail which registered her blood-alcohol content at .135 and .117. The legal limit for driving in Nevada is .08.

-- Firefighters extinguished a vehicle blaze Nov. 20 in a 1991 Chrysler LeBaron which the 25-year-old owner said she drove in first gear because the car would not shift.

According to reports, the driver said she drove the car in first gear from her residence in Bodie Flats six miles at 65 mph to the 7-Eleven at Riverview and Highway 395.

The woman said she noticed steam under the hood, but went into the convenience store to shop.

As she was paying for groceries, a clerk noticed the car was on fire.

The woman said she went outside and noticed hot coals dropping from the car.

-- A wildland fire spurred by winds late Monday night spread to 3 and a half acres and threatened two homes.

Career and volunteer firefighters from the East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts, Sheridan, the Gardnerville Ranchos and Genoa responded to the fire at the intersection of Mottsville Lane and Jones Ranch Road at 11:30 p.m.

East Fork Fire Investigator Capt. Terry Taylor said the fire was accidental and appeared to be related to the disposal of fireplace ashes.
