Deputy receives cut in Topaz Lake fracas

A deputy was injured during the arrest of two men at Topaz Lake campground after deputies responded to a dispute 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

"A camper while in possession of a hatchet, threatened to beat another camper," Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tom Mezzetta said. "When officers arrived, they were disruptive and one of them kicked a window out of a patrol car and some of the glass hit a deputy, cutting her forehead."

John Lara, 22, of Carson City, was arrested for battery on an officer by a prisoner, destruction of property, obstructing officers, attempting to elude officers and disorderly conduct in addition to a $3,000 warrant out of Carson.

Mezzetta said Lara had a hatchet in his pocket during the dispute, but never brandished it.

Lara is being held in lieu of $26,687 bail in the Douglas charges.

The second man, Bruce Borbeaux, 21, of Markleeville was taken into custody for harrassing officers, threats, obstruction and disorderly conduct. He also had a $3,000 cash only warrant out of Carson City. His bail is $1,187 in the Douglas charges.

Mezzetta said that otherwise the Memorial Day weekend was quiet.
