Busy days ahead

-- 9 a.m. May 30, the VFW will hold their Memorial Day ceremony at the Antelope Valley Cemetery in Coleville. It is impressive and stirring for our small area, so please try to attend to honor our soldiers.

Valley artists exhibit

May 29, 2 p.m., at the Coleville Library, the exhibit of local artists' works will be changed to highlight photography of the Valley and surrounding mountains. If you have some photos that you would like exhibited, call Nancy at (530) 495-2488 by Saturday.

Military training

As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, the U.S. Army will be holding aviation training exercises in the Little Antelope Valley from May 30 through June 10. Due to the response from the community, stating their concerns, the participants were given very specific rules and requirements for the land use. Fire, wildlife, and environmental issues were strongly addressed by the U.S. Forest Service in their decision. For example, the number of helicopters allowed in use at any given time has been limited, as well as the areas of Little Antelope that may be used for this exercise.

This and that

-- It was my pleasure to be invited to attend a charming Victorian-themed tea with the members of the Antelope Valley Women's Club last week. Various flavored teas were served, as well as a delicious assortment of luncheon goodies and desserts. It was a wonderful couple of hours with a very nice group of local ladies. If you are interested in meeting some really nice women and contributing to the community as well, call either Frances at (530) 495-2902 or Marylin at (530) 495-2189 for information.

-- The weather was more cooperative than last year for the fifth annual Walker Spring Fling, hosted by the Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce. There were many booths of lovely crafts, with a good offering of flea market items, too. Hopefully, all the participants were successful with their booth sales.

-- June 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Our Lady of the Valley Chapel will hold a rummage sale and barbecue at 112775 Highway 395 in Coleville, just south of base housing. This event will help them raise funds for their future church on that site.

-- June 2 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., a vaccination clinic for your pets will take place at the Walker Fire Station. You can "one-stop shop" there by getting any vaccinations needed and obtain your pet's license at the same time.

-- Mark your calendars now for Coleville High School's graduation June 16, 10 a.m. at the high school gym.

-- This is a time of the year that all the inconsiderate people come out of the woodwork. There has been a rash of dumping of trash on vacant properties instead of taking it to the disposal site. I think that those people who do this to others should have to leave their name, address and phone number with their trash, so that someone could return the favor on their property. Please be more neighborly than that, folks.
