American Legion tryouts set for Sunday

Carson Valley Pirates fundraiser

The Carson Valley Pirates U14 spring soccer team will host a car wash and bake sale Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stratton Center to raise funds for the Capital Classic tournament in Carson City.

AYSO Early Bird registration

Carson Valley AYSO will be taking soccer registration May 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Douglas High School.

The league is open to boys and girls between 4 and 18 years old as of July 31, 2007.

Certified birth certificates must be presented for check-off at the time of registration for all players.

The season runs from the beginning of August through mid-October.

All U-16 and U-19 boys and girls will need to bring a small wallet-size picture.

Cost for registration before May 22 is $45 for U-5 players, $65 for one player, $120 for two players and $40 for each additional player.

A $5 discount is given per family for online registration at www.eayso.org. Instructions are on www.ayso318.org.

Registration after May 22 will be $75 per player with no discounts.

Tennis lessons available

Youth and Adult Tennis Lessons are available May 21-24 at Lampe Park.

There will be additional summer youth camps beginning June 25 through August 9, 2007. Contact Parks and Recreation at 782-9828 for more information.

Private and group Lessons are available at Genoa Lakes Tennis Club. Genoa Lakes has scheduled a meeting June 7 for those interested in establishing an Adult doubles league.

Minimum age of 16 will be allowed to participate.

Pop Warner sign-ups

Douglas Pop Warner will conduct registration for football players and cheerleaders May 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Minden Medical Center. A parent or guardian must be present with a certified state issued birth certificate. Athletes are encouraged to sign up early as roster space is limited.

Practice begins the first week of August and the first games start in September. The season runs through early November and it is possible for teams to win in regionals and play in Orlando in December.

Kids' Fishing Derby

The dates for the 18th annual Kids' Fishing Derby at Lampe Park have been set for June 2 and 3 at Lampe Park.

The fish for the derby are being raised at Mason Valley Hatchery and Lahontan Hatchery. Derby organizers will also be purchasing fish from American Trout & Salmon out of Susanville, Calif.

This year, the grand prize for the raffle drawing will be a Kuzuma Pro 90 ATV with gloves and a helmet. A Playstation 3 console, and a guided salmon trip from Success Fishing Guide along with many other prizes have been donated.

Raffle tickets are $1 or six for $5 and can be purchased at Douglas County Parks & Recreation.

Each ticket this year includes a free soft serve cone from McDonald's.

Organizers are in need of approximately 300-plus volunteers to help with the event.

More than 2,200 children are expected to participate in the derby this year, making it one of the largest free fishing derbies west of the Mississippi River.

Minden Ranch Rodeo coming up

The Minden Ranch Rodeo Buckaroo Fest is slated for June 9 and 10 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

The rodeo, which is the second stop on the Nevada Saddle Series, has been in operation since 1999.

As a ranch rodeo, the events are based on activities that would occur on a normal working ranch, such as calf roping, ranch doctoring, team branding, team roping, wild cow milking, and ranch bronc riding.

The proceeds from the event go toward scholarships for high school rodeo participants in the area.

With the cost to put the event on rising, the rodeo committee is continuously seeking donations.

Activities begin June 9 at 9 a.m. at the fairgrounds with a performance that evening at 5 p.m. The performance on June 10 begins at 11 a.m.

Tiger basketball camp

The Douglas High School boys' and girls' basketball programs will host the 2007 Boys & Girls Tiger Basketball Camp June 19 through June 21 for first- through seventh-graders.

The camp gives a solid foundation to beginners and a strong challenge to advanced players.

Players will be coached in ball handling, passing, footwork, defense, rebounding and shooting.

Camp will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day with drills, individual and team competitions, games and special guest clinics.

The coaching staff for the camp includes Douglas boys' varsity coach Rob Streeter, girls' varsity coach Werner Christen, assistants Andy Hughes, Dave Pfaffenberger, Phil Emm, Joe Bertelone and Randy Green, Double-Pump West Coast All-Star Camp clinician Aubrey McCreary and Pepperdine University assistant Tim Kelly.

Cost is $110 per player and $90 for each additional member of the household. The cost goes up to $120 after June 4.

Alonzo's Football Skillz Camp

Registrations will begin soon for Alonzo's Football Skillz Camp is scheduled for June 21 through June 24 at Lampe Park.

The camp will be open to 5- to 17-year-olds who would like to work on their athleticism and football skills.

Alonzo Hatchett, a former pro football player and current Pop Warner coach, will lead the camp. Velocity Sports Performance's Cheyenne Pietri, former Boise State standout and current VSP sports performance director in Reno, will instruct dynamic warm-up and speed/agility training.

Position-specific instructors include Gabe Hatchett, who is entering this year's NFL Draft, as well as current and former college and Douglas High School football players.

A current NFL player will be featured as a guest speaker during the camp.

Camp attendees will receive instruction in speed, agility, flexibility, strength and training in running, throwing, blocking, catching, tackling and defending.

Fundraiser golf event

On June 23, 30-plus golfer will chase, hack and chip hundreds of golf ball from dawn until dusk at the Eagle Valley Golf Course in an effort to help Los Amigos de Esteli raise money.

Los Amigos de Esteli is a non-profit organization that provides mission work to Nicaragua, supported by High Sierra Fellowship in Gardnerville.

Each golfer is recruiting sponsors for their endeavor for this year's 10th short-term mission trip scheduled for July 30 to Aug. 6.

Carson Valley Grand Slam golf tourney

Stopping at the three Carson Valley golf clubs, the Carson Valley Grand Slam Golf Tournament is slated for June 24-28.

The tournament is designed to showcase the landscape of the region, making stops at Sunridge Golf Course, the Carson Valley Golf Course and the Genoa Lakes Golf Club. It will also feature an awards barbecue, a long-drive contest, a 2007 equipment demo, optional open play or skins game, a golf clinig and a hole-in-one prize.

"The Carson Valley Grand Slam Tournament will allow participants to experience all the levels of golf that have made Carson Valley one of the premiere golf locations in Northern Nevada," Bill Henderson of the Carson Valley Inn said.

Old Guys Basketball

Men 35 and older interested in playing pickup basketball are invited to the basketball court in the Pastoral Center at St. Gall Catholic Church every Sunday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m.

After teams are chosen, games go either full-court or half-court depending on how many show up. The sessions are strictly for fun and exercise.

Cost is $50, which is donated to the church for court upkeep. The sessions run from September to June.

Fall Ball in organizing stages

Carson Valley Little League is in the process of organizing a 2007 Fall Ball instructional baseball league.

The league would run from September to October for children ages 8 through 12.

The level of competition ranges anywhere from baseball purists, players preparing to move up a league or anyone hoping to work on specific aspects of their game.

The fee will be minimal for about a dozen games, a cap and a shirt.

Parks & Recreation looking for officials

Douglas County Parks & Recreation is looking for qualified officials for youth and adult sports in the following programs:

Youth basketball ($18 per game/Saturdays, January-March); Youth flag football ($14 per game/Saturdays, September-November); Youth volleyball ($16 per game/Saturdays, March-May); Adult volleyball ($18 per game/Monday-Thursday, fall, winter, spring); Adult basketball ($20 per game/Sundays, fall); Adult softball ($20 per game/Monday-Friday and tournaments, summer and fall); Adult flag football ($18 per game/Sundays, winter); Adult soccer ($30 per game/Sundays, spring); Adult baseball ($50 per game/Sundays, summer).

Officials must be willing to work nights and weekends and have a flexible schedule. Most games last approximately one hour. Training and certification will be provided by the recreation department and previous officiating experience is preferred. Willingness to be trained in multiple sports is also preferred.
