A student was treated for cuts Thursday after three people fell into the trophy case at Douglas High School as administrators tried to break up a fight in the commons.
Four students were arrested.
Sgt. Tom Mezzetta said officers were called to the school about 9:35 a.m.
He said the fight, which officers believed was gang-related, broke out among four male students in a hallway and spilled into the commons at 9:35 a.m.
"Apparently, it was two against two," Mezzetta said. "At one point, an administrator tried to get between two youths fighting and all three fell into the glass display case."
Mezzetta said the injured youth's family took him to the hospital for stitches.
Assistant principal Tom Morgan said school officials were unsure what caused the fight.
"Our goal is to get the school back to normal," Morgan said. "We'll be piecing the facts together as soon as possible to provide due process."
Morgan said a student who initiates a fight faces a five-day suspension for the first offense. On a second offense, the student may be recommended for expulsion.
"Our staff members who were involved in this situation did a great job of trying to maintain the safety of the school," Morgan said.
He said Athletic Director Jeff Evans, Coach Mike Rippee, custodian Bill Blumenthal and aide Larry Minihan immediately responded to the scene.
"The sheriff's office was incredibly prompt with their response which helped get the situation under control," Morgan said.
"Douglas High School is very safe," he said. "Although fights occur, it's not very often. We have great security and staff out and around the school to insure student safety."
