Briefly today: Douglas golfers strong on Day 1

Staff Reports

After the first day of Northern 4A Regional Golf Championships at Red Hawk in Sparks Monday, Douglas' two qualifiers stood in excellent position to move on to state.

Freshman Thomas Wicker posted an 80, nine strokes out of the lead, for 11th overall and sixth out of golfers not on the top two teams on day one.

The top two teams advance to state next week along with the top five players from non-qualifying teams.

Eric Guzman shot an 83, good enough for 22nd overall and 14th out of golfers not on the top two.

Spanish Springs led the team competition with a score of 378, compared to Carson and Galena, who each shot a 408 to tie for second.

Spanish Springs' Ren Wilson led the competition with a 71 and teammate Sach Beebe was in second with a 72. Carson's Kevin Goles was third with a 74.

Competition concluded Tuesday afternoon after The Record-Courier's press deadline. Results will be online and in Friday's paper.

Minden Ranch Rodeo coming up

The Minden Ranch Rodeo Buckaroo Fest is slated for June 9 and 10 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, but the entry deadline is May 15.

The rodeo, which is the second stop on the Nevada Saddle Series, has been in operation since 1999.

As a ranch rodeo, the events are based on activities that would occur on a normal working ranch, such as calf roping, ranch doctoring, team branding, team roping, wild cow milking, and ranch bronc riding.

The proceeds from the event go toward scholarships for high school rodeo participants in the area.

With the cost to put the event on rising, the rodeo committee is continuously seeking donations.

Activities begin June 9 at 9 a.m. at the fairgrounds with a performance that evening at 5 p.m. The performance on June 10 begins at 11 a.m.

To donate to the rodeo, call 782-5957.
