Driver charged in injury accident

A 30-year-old Reno man was jailed on $25,000 cash bail accused of leaving the scene of an accident in which two people were injured.

Gilberto Hernandez was charged with driving without a license and failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving personal injury or death.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Hernandez turned south on Highway 395 from Airport Road and failed to yield right of way about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

His vehicle collided with a 2005 Ford Escape which was northbound on Highway 395.

The Ford rolled numerous times, according to the NHP.

Thomas and Barbara Smith of Wellington, who were in the Ford, were taken by helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno where they were treated for their injuries and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Hernandez reportedly fled the scene in his van and was pursued by law enforcement officers who took him into custody near Ironwood.

He is to appear in East Fork Justice Court today.

Hernandez told East Fork Judge Jim EnEarl on Monday he was in the country illegally and could not afford a lawyer.

EnEarl appointed Derrick Lopez to represent him.
