Digest: Men's golf club results

The Carson Valley Men's Golf Club hosted a two-man better ball tournament at the Carson Valley Golf Course Sunday.

Matthew Budjako and John Carey took first place with a 60, Howard Matts and Isaac Lockwood took second with a 61, and the teams of Jim Bagley/Neil Bain, Mike Davis/John Dorman and Jim EnEarl/Paul Finan tied for third with a 62.

The teams of Ron Fukuyama/Jim Gaugham, Wayne Graham/Roger Hala, Don Harrison/T. Hines and J. Ryan/David Dick tied for sixth with a 63.

Russ Coons won closest to the pin honors on No. 1 coming with 8 feet, 10 inches, Ken Smitreski won on No. 5 at 24-0, Roger Hala won on No. 13 at 9-1, James Howard won on No. 17 at 8-1 and Jim Gaugham won on No. 18 at 6-4.

The Carson Valley Hurricanes girls' fastpitch softball club is looking for athletes to complete its rosters for the U16 and U14 teams.

Sheriff's office to conduct hunter safety classes

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office will conduct hunter safety courses on April 1.

Both sessions will be at the Douglas County Law Enforcement Building at 1625 8th Street in Minden from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Seating is limited to 25 students. For reservations, call 782-9900.

Particpants under the age of 18 may attend free of charge courtesy of the Carson Valley Chukar Club.

All others are required to pay an fee of $5. All attendees must obtain and complete the student workbook prior to the day of instruction.

Study materials and workbooks are available free at the Douglas County Sheriff's administrative office in Minden.

Students must be at least 11 years old to participate.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife will not issue a hunting license to anyone born after Jan. 1, 1960 unless he or she presents a certificate of completion of a recognized hunter safety course.

Elements U14, U16 fundraiser

The Carson Valley Elements U14 and U16 girls' soccer teams are hosting an all-you-can-eat spaghetti and salad feed fundraiser at the CVIC Hall in Minden March 30.

The event will feature music by DJ Randy Harwick, numerous raffle prizes, a silent auction and dinner.

The Elements are in their third season and been one of the most consistently successful teams in Northern Nevada, stressing both academic and sports excellence.

Players come from all over Carson Valley and South Lake Tahoe.

Proceeds from the spaghetti feed will go toward uniforms, tournament fees and travel expenses for the team.

Cost is $7 for dinner, which runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. As part of the Great Basin Youth Soccer Organization, all dinner donations are also tax deductible.

Snyder scholarships available

The Nicole Snyder Memorial Fund is offering various scholarships for Douglas High School students graduating in the 2006-07 academic year who wish to pursue their studies at any level of post-secondary education.

A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student participating in the varsity softball program during the 2007 season and two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to one male student and one female student participating in any varsity sports program during the 2006-07 school year.

Applicants will show they are motivated by a love of sports and hard work to accomplish their goals by submitting a one- to two-page essay describing how softball/sports play a positive role in their lives.

Several $1,000 non-sports scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate integrity, leadership, an ability to face life's challenges, determination and perseverance in overcoming adversity, and a desire to contribute to society.

Adult softball sign-ups

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is taking registration for summer adult softball for returning teams.

Registration deadline is April 22. New teams can begin signing up on April 2.

Cost is $650 per team for men's B and C and women's leagues and $410 for men's D and coed open.

The women's league plays on Monday and Wednesday nights, men's B plays on Tuesday and Thursday nights, men's C plays Monday and Wednesday nights, men's D plays on Tuesday nights and the coed open league plays on Friday nights.

The mandatory manager's meetings are scheduled for April 24 at 6 p.m. for women's and coed leagues and April 25 for men's.

Both meetings are held at the recreation annex, 1327 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

Adult baseball sign-ups

The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department will begin taking registration for adult baseball April 2.

This new wood bat league will comprise of a maximum of six teams with up to 25 players per team. Games will be played once a week on Sundays in the morning, afternoon or evening.

The season is scheduled to start May 20 and concludes in mid-August.

Registration deadline is May 11.

Players looking to get on a team are encouraged to call the recreation department to be put on a free agent list. Full payment is required at the time of registration.

All games will be played at Lampe Park on Field 1.

Cost is $950 per team for a 10-game season with a single-elimination tournament.

The mandatory manager's meeting is scheduled for May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Recreation Annex, 1327 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville.

Community Choice awards coming up

Greater Nevada Credit Union will present the third annual MEFIYI Community Choice Youth Awards Banquet this year at Genoa Lakes Golf Club at 6 p.m., May 31.

The event honors outstanding youth of Douglas County from ages 9 to 18 in the combined areas of academic excellence (minimum 3.0 GPA), athletic committment (individual or team sports that include cheerleading, dance, martial arts and other competitive recreational activities) and community service.

Two Greater Nevada Credit Union $500 education scholarships will be awarded to outstanding senior male and female athletes.

The event is also supported by NFL Charities, the Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation, The Record-Courier and the Robert R. Banks Foundation.

Last year, 56 athletes were honored at the banquet, which drew an attendance of 240.

Fully-completed applications require two letters of recommendations for the athletic and community service requirements.

To fulfill the scholastic requirement, a copy of a recent school progress report or a report card will be needed.

MEFIYI Spring Sports Spectacular

Spring break sports camps for boys and girls ages 5-16 beginning April 2 through April 12.

Camps will cover basketball, football and tennis.

Basketball camp will be instructed by Jam-On-It basketball academy and Carson Valley AAU.

NFL and University of Nevada football players will be on hand to instruct the football camp and the tennis camp will include instruction from USTA certified coaches.

Little League fundraiser

Carson Valley Little League will conduct its first fundraiser golf tournament April 21 at the Carson Valley Golf Course in Gardnerville.

Play begins at 9 a.m. and numerous prizes will be offered. Cost is $100 per person and all proceeds will go toward Little League baseball in the Valley.

"This is the first time we've ever tried something like this," said board member Mike Gamberg. "If it goes well, we'd like to make it an annual thing."

Carson Valley Little League will be looking for sponsors for holes and is seeking donations for prizes.

AYSO Early Bird registration

Carson Valley AYSO will be taking soccer registration on the following dates:

April 24, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Scarselli Elementary School; May 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Gardnerville Elementary School; May 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Douglas High School.

The league is open to boys and girls between 4 and 18 years old as of July 31, 2007.

Certified birth certificates must be presented for check-off at the time of registration for all players.

The season runs from the beginning of August through mid-October.

All U-16 and U-19 boys and girls will need to bring a small wallet-size picture.

Cost for registration before May 22 is $45 for U-5 players, $65 for one player, $120 for two players and $40 for each additional player.

Registration after May 22 will be $75 per player with no discounts.

CVI spring golf outing

The 18th annual Carson Valley Inn Spring Stag Golf Outing is April 26-29 at the two Genoa Lakes courses.

The Friday round will be at the Genoa Resort course and the Saturday round will be at the Genoa Lakes course.

The 36-hole scramble has proven to be a popular kick-off to the Northern Nevada golf season with players attending from throughout the West coast.

Players can come in teams of four or be teamed with others. Non-cash awards will be given to the top teams in each flight along with drawing prizes and closest-to-the-hole prizes.

Each participant also receives a souvenir tournament shirt and hat.

Carson Valley Inn rafting trip

The Carson Valley Inn will offer an all-inclusive rafting outing package with a 20-mile float fown the Carson River June 2.

The trip includes Friday and Saturday night hotel accomodations, a continental breakfast, a pre-trip briefing Saturday morning, bus transportation to and from the river and a shoreline lunch.

Kids' Fishing Derby

The dates for the 18th annual Kids' Fishing Derby at Lampe Park have been set for June 2 and 3 at Lampe Park.

The fish for the derby are being raised at Mason Valley Hatchery and Lahontan Hatchery. Derby organizers will also be purchasing fish from American Trout & Salmon out of Susanville, Calif.

This year, the grand prize for the raffle drawing will be a Kuzuma Pro 90 ATV with gloves and a helmet. A Playstation 3 console, and a guided salmon trip from Success Fishing Guide along with many other prizes have been donated.

Raffle tickets are $1 or six for $5 and can be purchased at Douglas County Parks & Recreation.

Each ticket this year will receive a free soft serve cone from McDonald's.

Organizers are in need of approximately 300-plus volunteers to help with the event.

More than 2,200 children are expected to participate in the derby this year, making it one of the largest free fishing derbies west of the Mississippi River.

Old Guys Basketball

Men 35 and older interested in playing pickup basketball are invited to the basketball court in the Pastoral Center at St. Gall Catholic Church every Sunday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m.

After teams are chosen, games go either full-court or half-court depending on how many show up. The sessions are strictly for fun and exercise.

Cost is $50, which is donated to the church for court upkeep. The sessions run from September to June.
