Family Literacy Night rocked

I'll tell you, our schools here in Douglas County rock! Piñon Hills Elementary School hosted Family Literacy Night on March 22, and it was so much fun.

Eight different choices were offered for parents and their children to choose from. Teachers Debbie Davis and Janet McDonnell offered board games saying you'd be "board" in a different way. We had particular fun with moving a pawn through a maze and you got to move one square to change the path of the maze to get you to where you needed to go. It was really fun; I'd like to buy that game.

Susan Moore offered Reading Comes Alive where you could join the cast of Readers Theater and express yourself. Hollie Harvey and Karen Sullivan had a book walk, like a cake walk but you could win a book as you walked to music. Adam Dack and his sister Emily each won two books during their time at this game. Then K.D. Dehnert, a fourth-grader, also won two books. Way to go, guys. Beckie Tollman and Kelly Pollard had Bookmark Madness so we could be creative and make our own bookmarks for our favorite book. They had four stations set up to make four different kinds of bookmarks and boy did I see some creative kids. Then there was Sarah Russell and Michelle McOmber with Read a Recipe and make a treat. The recipe was: 1/2 cup raisins, 1/2 cup peanuts, 1/2 cup Cheerios or Chex cereal, 1/2 cup banana chips or dried fruit and 1/2 cup M&Ms. I think everyone enjoyed this stop because lots of people were nibbling out of their snack bags as they walked down the halls. Angie Coleman and Val Dearborn hosted Magic Mosaic Bookmarks where you could make a magical bookmark. I wonder how that worked. Jenny Tanner, Karen Buck and Denise Bickmore had a Beach Ball Word Toss where they tossed sight words. Brenda Downs had a Read Aloud Fun with guest readers from a recent writing contest. Lastly, Carly Strauss hosted Letter Getters where you had to use your language skills to solve riddles.

Jenee wrote, "I like family literacy night because i_ w__ f__." Get it? It was fun. Thanks to the P.T.O. for another great family event.

In search of a cup

I broke my favorite cup today. As I walked Jenee to the bus stop, she had accidentally locked the front door as she closed it. When I got home and tried to get in, I was suddenly worried the back door may not be unlocked. How would I get in? I'd have to wake my husband up by pounding on the window and he's a deep sleeper and may not hear me. I put my cup on the fence post trying to open the gate and it fell off. It was my favorite cup for everything except iced tea. It was the perfect size, it had the perfect handle and it wasn't too heavy. Darn it, well that's not exactly what I said, but we won't go there.

Condolences

Our thoughts and prayers go to family of Connie Wennhold. My boys used to play soccer with her boys years ago. She was a nice lady. We will miss her.
