Man arrested for failure to register as a sex offender

A man who was living at a construction site in the 800 block of Arrowhead was arrested March 22 for failing to register as a sex offender.

Juan Delacruz, 50, was convicted in Texas in 1997 of indecency with a child. He is considered a tier 2 offender at moderate risk to re-offend.

State law mandates that sex offenders register with law enforcement within 48 hours of relocating.

According to an acquaintance, Delacruz had been living at the job site since January.

He was being held in Douglas County Jail on $1,000 cash bail and was expected to be returned to California where he was wanted in El Dorado County for failure to appear.

East Fork Judge Jim EnEarl set a Wednesday hearing for Delacruz.

-- A preliminary hearing is set Friday to determine whether Fidel Fuentes, 24, of Las Vegas, should be bound over to Douglas County District Court on charges of possession of stolen property and obstructing a police officer.

Fuentes was arrested March 12 in connection with an alleged assault on a Washoe Tribal Police officer in Indian Hills.

He was a passenger in a vehicle reportedly driven by Robert Michael Hernandez, 20, stepson of Carson City Mayor Marv Teixeira.

Hernandez, of Carson City, is accused of driving a sport utility vehicle into a Washoe Tribal Police cruiser. There were no injuries.

Hernandez remained at large, the subject of a nationwide arrest warrant. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and felony eluding.

Upon his arrest, Hernandez is to be held on $100,000 cash bail.

Fuentes was arrested March 12 and has been in Douglas County Jail on $35,500 bail.

-- A 34-year-old transient was charged with principal to a burglary after he allegedly acted as a lookout for three other men attempting to break into storage units in the 1400 block of Industrial Way in Gardnerville.

Juan Carlos Sanchez-Garcia, who listed an address in Los Angeles, was found hiding under a truck after deputies were called to United Rentals just before 9 p.m. March 21.

Deputies found several equipment sheds open in the southeast corner of the storage yard. Three cut-off master locks were on the ground near the fence.

The suspects apparently dragged out three dirt compactors, cut a hole in the fence and removed a slat in an attempt to remove the equipment.

Sanchez-Garcia, who initially denied he was involved, told deputies three other men ran after he alerted them to a patrol car in the area.

He said he met the three in Carson City where he was looking for work.

The manager of the storage unit said he would take inventory to determine if any items were stolen.

Sanchez-Garcia is to appear in East Fork Justice Court today. He is being held in Douglas County Jail on $25,000 bail.

-- A Dayton man who was tackled by three Douglas County deputies as he tried to flee the judicial center in Minden is to appear in court today for alternative sentencing violations and a new offense of resisting a public officer.

Roger Martinez, 27, asked Judge Jim EnEarl on Friday why he couldn't be released from Douglas County Jail where he's being held on $10,000 cash bail.

"I think you are a danger to the community," EnEarl said. "I have done everything I can to try to straighten you out. I think you are out of control."

Martinez tried to escape March 21 after he tested positive for marijuana.

He had been sentenced Jan. 4 for domestic battery and received a 178-day suspended sentence. He was already serving 90 days for a prior offense.

Martinez was released from Douglas County Jail on Feb. 4, but failed to appear March 12 to prove he was in counseling and to pay fees.

Martinez asked to explain what happened, but EnEarl told him to wait until today.

EnEarl also granted an extension of a temporary protection order filed by Martinez's estranged wife on charges of stalking and harassment. The couple has been separated since August.

Martinez said he would agree "because she'll get what she wants anyway."

He asked the judge if he could write to his children.

"I know I am never going to get to see my kids again," he said. "I'm a male in Nevada. I'm already guilty. I know I will get violated and spend six months in here. I would like to keep in written contact with my children," Martinez said.

EnEarl said that decision was up to District Court.
