The Carson Valley Photo Club, the brainchild of club president Dave Colon, met for the first time in November of last year. About a dozen folks attended the first meeting but subsequent meetings have drawn the interest of more than 30 photographers.
"The club includes amateurs, a few pros and lot of 'in-betweens,' club vice-president Pat Stanley said. "Most members, but not all, use digital cameras, ranging from inexpensive point-and-shoot cameras to professional gear. Dues are $12 a year (a dollar a meeting) and are assessed after attendance at three meetings."
Stanley, a retired newspaper writer for the Napa Valley Register in California, stressed that the goal of the club is to offer a chance to learn how to take better photographs and enjoy it.
Once a month the club has a contest with first- through third-place photos chosen. The contest for the month of February was open to any subject but prior contests have revolved around themes such as Christmas photos, ranches and farms or ice and snow. The next theme will be people.
Monthly winning photographs by club members will be displayed in the lobby of the Douglas County Public Library, 1625 Library Lane, Minden. The displays will be sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
The club meets 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Douglas County Public Library in Minden. Sometimes the speakers offer how-to lessons. The club also has planned photographic field trips, first to Genoa and later to any spot where wildflowers are in bloom.
