Events offered for fly-fishing enthusiasts

High Sierra Fly Casters is hosting a presentation by Jay Bigalow from the Federal Cutthroat Hatchery and Doug Anderson of the Mason Valley Hatchery, who will discuss how the hatcheries operate and fine tune everything from salinity and temperature to raising the fish. The presentation will take place at the regular meeting on Wednesday at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. Social time begins at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting at 7 p.m. The fly casters are encouraging anyone interested in fly-fishing to attend.

-- Future outings will include beginner "fish-outs." The next fish-outing is scheduled for the Rosaschi Ranch on the East Walker River. High Sierra Fly Casters was instrumental in developing this fishery as a catch-and-release water. Large rainbows and browns lurk in riffles and pools throughout the river. This fish-outing is scheduled for March 25. Call Angler's Edge in Gardnerville for more information, 782-4734, or Mike Kingston at 267-5250.

n The annual High Sierra Fly Casters dinner is coming up on April 21. This annual dinner has funded Trout in the Classroom, Heenan Lake and Rosaschi Ranch. This year, the club will be making an effort to fund two retreats for Reel Recovery, a fly-fishing retreat for men fighting life-threatening cancer. For more information on any of the above, contact Mike Kingston at 267-5250 or Liz Weirauch at the Angler's Edge, 782-4734.

n On another note, recently, the California Department of Fish & Game renewed some regulations regarding catch-and-release waters. The East Carson below Hangman's Bridge and the East Walker below Bridgeport Reservoir, both to the Nevada border, opened March 1 to catch-and-release fishing. These waters are now open year round. Special regulations are enforced, be sure to check the fish and game book. This exciting news also includes portions of the Owens, Truckee, Pit and Hat Rivers.
