Little League Hooligans suffer setbacks at district

After winning its first two games of the Nevada District I tournament, the Carson Valley Little League Hooligans All-Star team suffered double setbacks over the weekend.

On Saturday, Carson Valley dropped a 10-0 decision to North Tahoe despite a strong first three innings on the mound from pitcher Steven Hiatt. Dalton Grisell pitched effectively in relief for Carson Valley as well.

Catcher Jake Mariani singled in the first inning, but that ended up being all the offense that Carson Valley could muster in the game.

Cooper Jones hit what looked to be a solid single in the fourth, but North Tahoe's shortstop made a play on it for the out and Caleb Duster and Michael Hoyt each stole a base.

Duster extended his stolen base total for the tournament to five.

On Sunday, against Washoe, Carson Valley fell back early and dropped a 15-1 decision.

Duster singled to right and Grisell drew a walk to account for Carson Valley's only baserunners. Grisell came around to score on a passed ball for the lone run.

Doyle got the start on the mound and threw well, but some miscues in the field allowed Washoe to bring a number of runs around.

Left fielder Joey Swisher made one of the defensive plays of the tournament, making a running catch on a sinking line drive.

Despite the two losses in as many days, Carson Valley qualified for the single-elimination bracket out of Pool B and will take on Pool A's No. 2 team in the first round.
