Two weeks left for How Big is Big fishing derby

This Saturday, starting 10 a.m. at Coleville High School, the Antelope Valley Relay for Life team is having a fundraising car wash. The proceeds will go to the fight against cancer through the American Cancer Society. Cost will be $5 for cars and $10 for trucks. What a bargain! Please support their efforts in this fight against the big killer.

One tough lady

Local residents Lee and Nancy Sims' daughter, Molly, rode again in last Saturday's Death Ride over the Sierra mountain passes. Molly has ridden in the ride for 2 years. This year, she again covered 5 mountain passes, with a total climb on the bike of 15,000 feet. Better her than me. It was really great to visit with her at Lee and Nancy's home on Sunday and appreciate how much she loves participating in the sport and how tough it is.

Fire department 60th anniversary

Saturday, Aug. 4, starting at 3 p.m., there will be an afternoon in the Walker Community Park for local residents to meet their firefighters, see equipment and some pictures of the 60-year history of the department. The kids will have fun with the fire equipment, and all can enjoy the barbecued burgers and hot dogs that will be available. Come to the park and enjoy the afternoon.

How Big is Big

There are only two weeks left to get your prize-winning entry in to the Walker General Store. As of Sunday afternoon, the biggest fish caught on the West Walker River and turned in for registration was a 6 pound, 2 ounce rainbow. There are great prizes to win, so get out there and try to catch the big one. My husband, Mike, caught a 5 pound rainbow, so we know they're there.

This and that

There is a very large sign outside the Walker Thrift Store, warning people not to leave items if the store is closed. It advises that this is a violation of California Health and Safety Code and is considered a misdemeanor. People keep leaving items that they should have taken to our local disposal site, which has very reasonable dump charges. The thrift store has requested stepped-up patrolling of the area, which will result in citing those who are found violating the law.

If you are interested in adoption, there will be an orientation presentation by the Mono County Department of Social Services on July 28. It will be held in Mammoth Lakes between 9 and 11 a.m. For more information, call Kathy Watkins at (760) 924-1793.
