Fire expands to 650 acres

The Sleeping Elephant fire has expanded to 650 acres in southern Douglas County.

Evacuations are still in effect in the Albite Rroad area on the north side of State Route 208. A Red Cross shelter has been established at Smith Valley High School. Earlier reports that a shelter had been set up at Douglas High School were refuted by a school official.

The number of firefighters working the blaze have increased to 150. The fire has been driven back from Highway 208 and is headed toward Topaz Lake.
