Hoops roundup: Lady Wolves come back to beat Smith Valley

The Coleville girls' basketball team put together a furious fourth quarter comeback Friday night to defeat the visiting Smith Valley Bulldogs 38-34.

The Wolves fell seven points behind early in the fourth quarter before riding an outstanding defensive effort to the four-point victory.

Coleville shut out the Bulldogs for the last four minutes of the game and used full-court pressure to provide scoring opportunities for an offense that struggled all night.

Junior guard Amara Rowley sparked the comeback effort with her suffocating defense and four critical points down the stretch.

Rowley ended the night with 11 steals, 11 rebounds and led all scorers with 17 points.

Sophomore Skyler Isbell also came up big in the fourth quarter, scoring three free-throws and coming up with numerous rebounds.

Isbell finished the night with seven points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Junior Kimberly Torley also played well, scoring eight points and grabbing seven rebounds.

"We really struggled offensively, shooting only 21 percent from the field," Coleville coach Will Sandy said. "We trailed most of the game and fell behind 12 points at one time in the first half.

"I was very proud of our second half effort. The girls were outstanding on defense and really took control of the boards down the stretch. I continue to be amazed by the mental toughness of this team."

Earlier in the week, Coleville cruised to a 54-18 win over Excel Christian.

Torley scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds.

Rowley finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals and Sarah Holden had five points and six rebounds in a solid performance.

Kassie Pemberton, Kayla Johnson, Isbell and Molly Garcia each scored four points in the non-league victory.

The first-place Lady Wolves (11-6, 4-0) try to remain unbeaten in league play Friday against a very tough Virginia City team.

The game begins at 6 p.m. in Virginia City. Coleville will host Sierra Lutheran Saturday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. start time.
