Flying scholarships for women available

The Reno Area Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, International Organization of Women Pilots is awarding three flying scholarships to women. Two scholarships will be in the amount of $3,000 each. They will award two women who already have a private pilot certificate and wish to continue training towards an advanced rating or certificate. One scholarship will be awarded to a woman who is in the process of learning to fly. She must have soloed prior to making application. Scholarships may be used for power aircraft, glider or balloon.

The Ninety-Nines were formed in 1929 with the mission of promoting world fellowship through flight, providing networking and scholarship opportunities for women and aviation education in the community, along with preserving the unique history of women in aviation.

Members of the Reno Area Chapter have worked at the Reno Air Races since their inception. Through donations contributed back from the Reno Air Racing Foundation, thousands of dollars in scholarships have been awarded in the past. Last year a total of $5,000 was awarded to two women for advanced certificates. The chapter also uses some of the funds to provide aerospace education to Girl Scout troops of Northern Nevada.

Applicants must live within a 75 nautical mile radius of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport to the north, west or south. The boundary extends to the Nevada border to the east.
