1A Basketball: Lady Wolves top Virginia City



The Coleville girls' basketball team opened league play with a 51-37 home win over the Virginia City Muckers.


The Lady Wolves used a balanced offensive effort with Amara Rowley and Kimberly Torley each scoring 11 points.


Kayla Johnson found her outside stroke, adding nine points and Molly Garcia scored eight points inside the paint.


Rowley and Skyler Isbell led Coleville in rebounding with 10 boards each and Garcia grabbed seven rebounds.


As a team Coleville out-rebounded the Muckers 45-38.


Rowley led the Wolves in assists with five and in steals with nine.


Kassi Pemberton also played a solid all-around game with six points, four assists and five steals.


"Virginia City concentrated their defensive effort on stopping Amara," Coleville coach Will Sandy said. "I was extremely proud of how the rest of the team stepped up and picked up the offensive slack.


"We were a little sloppy with the ball, but consideing we hadn't played for almost two weeks, I was very happy with our team's overall performance."


Coleville is not 7-5 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Wolves host Gerlach this weekend.




COLEVILLE BOYS


Virginia City overcame a strong Coleville start to take a 61-50 win Friday night.


Coleville jumped out to a 17-4 lead, but struggled in the middle of the game.


"We got some good play but our third quarter was horrible," coach Jack McCormack said. "We stayed close with them but just couldn't overcome that lead toward the end."


Trevor Anderson led the team with 17 points and freshman Jason Peters had 12 points and 10 rebounds.


Coleville is now 5-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.
