Highways 50, 88 closed over Sierra

Snow is falling sideways at times in Carson Valley as winds and light snow conspire to reduce visibility.

Accumulations of snow are light with temperatures slightly above freezing. There's about a half inch of snow on the ground, but not very much on the roads in the Valley.

Highways 50 and 88 are closed over the passes for avalanche controls and getting over Interstate 80 is going to require chains. Chains or snow tires are required on Kingsbury Grade and climbing 88 into Woodfords. They are also required for Highway 50 from South Lake Tahoe to Carson City. A high wind warning remains in effect for Highway 395 in Washoe Valley.
