East Fork nominated for award

In addition to a savings of an estimated $1 million for local taxpayers, a cooperative effort between Douglas County and Carson City fire departments has been recognized by the Nevada Taxpayer's Association.

The East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts and the Carson City Fire Department are one of five finalists for the Cashman Good Government Award, which recognizes innovations on the part of government and other entities for innovations that save taxpayers money.

The two departments created a special zone at the Carson City/Douglas County border, a move that has eliminated unnecessary duplication and allows cooperative efforts between the two agencies.

"If Walmart has a fire and we're busy, Carson City can respond," said Douglas County Fire Chief Tod Carlini. "The same is true for East Fork, if Costco has a fire."

The program started about 10 months ago and has worked exceptionally well with respect to basic services, Carlini said.

"It increases our ability to put personnel where they are needed," he said. "It's been very beneficial."

Carlini said East Fork built three brush trucks from the chassis up last year, earning them a Cashman nomination in 2006, but they didn't win.

"A new engine would have cost $240,000," he said. "Ours cost $160,000 each."

Nominees for the Cashman Award are judged on their efforts to spend taxpayer dollars wisely and efficiently, as well as the ability to create effective, open and accountable government.

Non-elected, full-time employees in state and local governments, including school districts, are eligible for the trophy, which will be presented at the association's annual legislative dinner, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Carson City Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. in Carson City.
