Church building approved

At the planning commission meeting Feb. 1, the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church building request was approved for construction of the new chapel, which will be located on the property of John and Mary Nygard, south of Marine housing. This is good news for the Catholics in Antelope Valley, who have gone too long without a church. The church will gratefully accept donations by mailing to Our Lady of the Valley Chapel, P.O. Box 200, Coleville, Calif., 96107.

Friends of the Library

There will be a meeting to form a local chapter of Friends of the Library, 4 p.m. today at the Coleville Library. They will serve refreshments, elect officers, and set their goals for the months to come. You are invited to attend and become a part of this group.

Student speakers contest

John Elliott of the Antelope Valley Lions Club has informed me that their annual student speaker competition will be Feb. 13 at the Walker Community Center. At 6 p.m., they will provide light food to nibble, the competition begins at 7 p.m. The contestants from Coleville are Brittney Rupp and Jay Seghers; the contestants from Eastern Sierra Academy haven't yet been announced. Our local representative did very well last year, so let's get behind this competition for our teens.

Local fundraiser

A raffle of several very nice items will be held to assist Mike and Diane Elliott with additional expenses they are incurring for Diane's care. The drawing will take place Feb.14 at Meadowcliff Resort. The tickets are $2, or six for $10. For further information or to buy tickets, contact either Mary at Meadowcliff (530) 495-2255 or Dianne at (530) 495-2508.

Coming local events

-- A retirement party/dinner is being held Feb. 24 at Topaz Lodge & Casino for Pete Levy, supervisor of the Mono County Paramedics. The no-host bar will open at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m. Dinner will be a buffet with prime rib as the main entree, but there will be many more dishes available. The tickets are $20 per person, which includes dinner, gratuity and a gift for Pete. It's a great way to thank Pete for all he has done for residents in his 31 years with the Paramedics. Reservations and payment are needed by Feb. 15 through Dianne at the Flower Shop. You can reach her at 530-495-2508.

-- There will be a basketball game, sponsored by the Coleville Boosters, at Coleville High School March 3, between the Mono County Sheriff's Department and the school's varsity basketball team. More information will follow, but mark your calendar now.

-- The seventh annual Jackie Giorgi Pasture Golf Tournament will take place April 7. It's time to start lining up your foursome to be sure you don't miss this fun event and the great food the Lions Club serves. The cost is $25 per player, which covers the golf and lunch. All money collected from the tournament goes to the Jackie Giorgi Scholarship Fund for Coleville High School graduates. More to follow on this great event.

This and that

-- The girls' varsity basketball team has played very well this year, and they look to be headed for the regional tournament in Reno from Feb. 15-17. The boys' year has been a lot tougher, but we have still enjoyed watching and rooting for all of the athletes and the school.

-- The Walker River Color Guard performed prior to the basketball games at Coleville High School last Saturday. For those who hadn't seen them before, it was a great experience. These 20 young people were so good that they really impressed their audience. We're looking forward to future appearances and hope they'll happen soon.
