More than 150 4-H members, leaders, supporters and parents gathered at the Carson Valley Methodist Church in Gardnerville on Dec. 17 for the annual Douglas County 4-H awards night and holiday program.
Members of 4-H Teen Institute, a leadership program of 4-H, planned and hosted the evening. Mistress of ceremonies was Jessica Felix, a ninth-year 4-H member. Presenting the colors were Shannon Martinez and Jonathon Glocknitzer.
Leading the pledge of allegiance was Sierra Montana and the 4-H Pledge, Rebecca Glocknitzer. Introducing the annual year-end slideshow was Amber Friesen.
Awards night committee members were Kayla Boldrick, Jessica Felix, Amber Friesen, Jonathon Glocknitzer, Rebecca Glocknitzer, Shannon Martinez, Sierra Montana, Amelia Ritger and Briana Rutherdale.
The evening included a potluck, the end of year slide show and holiday caroling with piano by Mr. Wayne. There was the unexpected arrival of a special guest from the North Pole, Santa Claus, assisted by his No. 1 elf, Shannon Martinez. Santa brought presents for every child.
The 4-H is a youth development program of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. For information call 782-9960 or www.unce.unr.edu. Youth enroll in yearly projects where adult volunteers lead a topic to help youth learn life skills like public speaking, community service, team work and goal setting.
Two achievements that we recognize at our annual award's program are member year pins and project medals. To earn a year pin you must attend 75 percent of all meetings and workouts, perform community service and exhibit your project.
Some members go on to earn a project medal.To earn a project medal you also have to turn in a portfolio/record book in addition to meeting your year pin requirements.
