Tennis: Douglas sweeps Wooster in tennis

Both the Douglas boys' and girls' tennis teams cruised to easy victories over the Wooster Colts in the season-opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon.

The girls played at home and took control early.

Playing in her high school debut, freshman Amelia Ritger took Douglas' No. 1 spot for the match and excelled.

Wooster No. Diana Kovaltchouk brought a sharp power game, but Ritger calmly deflected it with a variety of off-speed shots and a steady return game.

Ritger cruised with a 6-0 win, exercising some power of her own at the net along the way.

She captured the last game after fighting through four deuces.

Ritger went on to win all three of her matches Tuesday by the score of 6-0.

Samantha Barns won two of her three to give Douglas five singles points in its opener.

In doubles, Sarah Barnhill and Lauren Seymour swept through their three matches 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1 and Madison VanderByl and Jackie Sunderland won each of their two matches to boost the Tigers.

The teams of Jenna Dykes-Caitlyn Boddy and Liz Nickles-Kat Merrill each won one match as well.

The boys took Wooster on in Reno, winning 12-6 while getting a near-perfect performance from their singles players.

Senior Keagan Chipp, playing in the No. 2 slot, blistered through his three matches, winning 18 consecutive games.

No. singles player Robert Shawhan won 18 of his 19 games on the afternoon to post three more points and No. 3 Andrew Soloman won two of his three matches.

Spike Neri and John McLaughlin went 2-1 on the afternoon in doubles, as did the team of Tim Doran and Marshall Jessup.

Douglas hosted defending regional champion Galena Thursday afternoon.
