Thomas Walter 'Tommy' Makara

1951-2007

Memorial services will take place 1 p.m. Sept. 8 at Tahoe Community Church, Kingsbury Grade and Daggett Way in Stateline for Thomas Walter "Tommy" Makara, who died Aug. 13, 2007, at his home in Stateline, following a long battle with cancer.

Mr. Makara was born July 14, 1951, in Natrona Heights, Pa.

He was a 50-year resident of Stateline and graduated from George Whittell High School in 1969. Tommy was employed in construction and as a plumber with several companies including Perini Construction and Q&D Construction.

He worked on the Marriott's Grand Residence Resort and Timber Lodge and Cecil's Plaza at Stateline.

He also worked on projects in Minden, Gardnerville and Carson City.

He was well known throughout the community for his outgoing personality and was chairman of the Oliver Park General Improvement District.

His passions were his family and friends, his yard and flowers and yard sales. He enjoyed both buying and selling, especially cars, and collected anything and everything.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Davis of Stateline; brother, John Makara of Reno; daughters, Brittney Makara of Stateline and Tina Makara of Pennsylvania; granddaughter, Mariah Adelle Makara of Pennsylvania; half-brothers, Ted, Walley and Andrew Makara, all of Pennsylvania; half-sisters, Rose, Joanne, Helen and Mary Makara, all of Pennsylvania; cousins, Misty Jones and Mike Edder of Carson City, Sharon Coleman of Napa, Calif., and Cheryle Weinstock of Mesa, Ariz.; as well as numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the South Lake Tahoe Cancer League, P.O. Box 17962, South Lake Tahoe, Calif., 96151.

Harold W. Witte

1910-2007

A funeral service was Tuesday at FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home in Gardnerville for 34-year resident Harold W. Witte, 97, who died Aug. 24, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Witte was born Feb. 1, 1910, in Muscatine, Iowa to Carl Witte and Amelia Bolling. He married Lucille Seltzer, Feb. 16, 1929 in La Grange, Ill. He was an electrician and foreman at Glass Containers until he retired after 29 years in 1973. Moving to the Carson Valley from South Gate, Calif., he was a member of Valley Spring Baptist Church and enjoyed fishing and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Witte, brothers Ray and Don Witte, sister Jeanette Glasgow, son-in-law Dennis Rusler and granddaughter Robyn Rusler. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Donna Witte; daughter Joyce Rusler; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Arrangements were in the care of FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home in Gardnerville. Burial took place at Eastside Memorial Park in Minden.
