The Town of Gardnerville presents the 1942 classic movie "Casablanca" as this month's Movie in the Park tonight in Heritage Park. Carson Valley Lions Club will be selling popcorn and cold drinks, vendors will be selling pizza, ice cream and Italian ices. Entertainment provided by Wayne's Family Music. Movie starts at dusk. John Jorgenson Quintet plays


Minden Park.


The free Summer Concert Series at Minden Park continues with the John Jorgenson Quintet, 6:30- 8:30 p.m. tonight.


Jorgenson plays a Gypsy-style of jazz made popular in the 1930s by Django Rheinhardt. He has played with Elton John and was the leader of the Desert Rose Band and the Hellecasters.


The concerts in the park are presented by Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department. The Minden/Douglas Elks Lodge No. 2670 will provide food and nonalcoholic beverages for sale. Information, 782-9828.




Sword seminar


on Saturday


Northwest Martial Arts hosts a Kenjutsu seminar featuring Sensei Ron Taniguchi from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. During the seminar, Taniguchi will cover basic and intermediate kenjutsu techniques as well as kotachi waza or short sword technique.

Art events during Second Saturday


Meet California Fiber Artists for wine and hors d'oeuvres at a reception 2 p.m. Saturday at Artisans International Gallery. The "Deconstruction/Reconstruction - Art from Recycled Materials" exhibit runs through Sept. 8. The gallery is at 1653 Lucerne St., Suite B, in Minden Village.

for ice cream


The Douglas County Public Library in Minden is having an ice cream social for participants in the teen summer reading program 4 p.m. Saturday with homemade ice-cream-in-a-can. 101 candles for Minden this year


The Town of Minden will hold its annual picnic 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Minden Park. Hamburgers, Polish sausage and all the fixings including cake and soft drinks provided, live music by Ben Crocker from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Information, 782-5976.
