Taste of Gardnerville a success

Thank you so much, Douglas County, for your wonderful participation in this year's Taste of Gardnerville. It was a huge success and we at the Douglas County Historical Society are very grateful.

In particular we want to thank all the restaurants that participated: Overland Basque Restaurant, Antioch Coffee Co., the New Rancho Grande, J.T. Basque Bar & Dining Room, Two Guys from Italy, Woodett's Diner and Paradise Café. We particularly want to thank Port of Subs, Papa Murphy's and Margarita Man for setting up booths in the museum parking lot and getting the crowds started on their evening.

We want to thank the shops that participated: Orchard Antiques, Fresh Ideas, Baby Willows, Classical Glass, Cheshire Antiques, Country Carousel and CJS Floors. They all featured a wonderful array of items for sale as well as tasty food and drink.

We want to thank the musicians: Ben Crocker, Georgette Twain and All Hat & No Cattle. They kept everyone entertained and not just a few dancing to their tunes.

And we want to thank all those valuable volunteers who came out to help. They are always there when we need them and we can't thank them enough.

Perhaps most of all, we want to thank all who bought tickets and came out to dine, shop and enjoy a pleasant summer evening. Thank you so much for your support of our museums.

I'm sure everyone who attended will agree that the food was excellent and the shops were superb. As far as we're concerned, they are all winners and we are grateful for their participation. But you voted for your favorites and your winners are:

-- Most Tantalizing Ð Woodett's Diner

-- Best Atmosphere Ð The J.T. Bar

-- Best Overall Ð The J.T.

-- Best Shop Ð Classical Glass

-- Best Discovery Ð Paradise Café

I'd like to hand out a few more thank yous, one to Grace Bower, Douglas County Historical Society President, Taste of Gardnerville Committee Chair and tireless volunteer. Thank you Grace for your steadfast service to the historical society and its two museums. And thank you to Jesse Bower, Grace's husband, who works right along side her making sure everything goes according to plan.

While I'm handing out thank yous, I'd like to thank all those who came out to see our play, "Portrait of a Pioneer Woman." Play co-author Mrs. Beatrice Fettic Jones was among those in attendance. At 98 years young, her mind is still sharp and her memory is intact. She really seemed to enjoy the performance.

Sue Smith, who is in charge of educational programs for DCHS, promises additional theater in coming months. She is planning to bring in our local historian, Billie Jean Rightmire, as well as others with special knowledge about Douglas County. She also plans encore performances of the play in a few months.

If you bought your tickets early for "The Curse of the Hanging Tree," please check the date of the performance on the ticket and call DCHS at 782-2555. Due to a major conflict we have had to change the dates of the performances and you might need to get new tickets.

Performances of "The Curse of the Hanging Tree" are 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 and 6, 6:45 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22.

For more information on anything above, call 782-2555.

or the Genoa Court House Museum at 782-4325. Visit the Web site at www.historicnevada.org. And, if you have the time, both museums are always looking for interested volunteers.
